SPD Retreat
Yawnz + Ultra Full Day
Today was SPD Retreat, Retreat was not those army war Retreat. Was just something which bring the whole SPD to discuss on those things they do. Our retreat was held at Gellery Hotel, near Mohammad Sultan. Arrival time stated 9.15am, i reach at 9.05am but all had reached.
We start off with a Energiser, it was a game meant for making us awake. We played Dog and Bone, A breif explanation on how the game work. When the game-master (Andrea) shout out the number, the number must run out get the bone back to his base. What is our number? We first divide ourself evenly into 2 groups, then from the group we get our dog number :p As for the bone, there aren't any real bone around. It was just a roll of masking tape, on the ground there was a line being marked. Abjective - get the bone back over the line win 1 point.
After the game, we get back to our group and then Kok Eng give us a brief start. On what we will be discussing later. Each group is to have a presenter and a writer to write on the flip chart. Raymond volunteer to be writer and Siew Ling volunteer to be presenter. So they start off discussing about the 2 question. 1st question about what strength does SPD have. 2nd Question what role is SPD in MHQ, what gaps can we fill and what value can we add to MHQ. Each Group have a leader, Group 1 (My group) - DD/SP & Research Dr Lal; Group 2 - DD/SD Raymond Tan; Group 3 2AD/SP Zhi Yang.
Then they were given each around 1 hour to discuss about this 2 Question. Our group start off by naming out all our strengths. whats is on my head is lots of ???, because i still dont know what does SPD normally do. On and on they go, as expected by Kok Eng. They discussed more then 1hr, exceeded 10 - 15mins. So that means during the presentation time all sure run smooth and then our break and lunch timeslot wont be affected. After the presentation coming up next is Lunch. We all proceed to the Hotel's restaurant. This hotel is so troublesoom. We need to go back lobby, then take another lift to reach the restaurant.
Yummy, the food was pretty wonderfull. It was a buffet style, with a choice of fried rice and spegatti to choose. I took both alittle and go 2 rounds if i didnt remember wrongly. At first thought of going Bishan stadium to watch Home Utd match. As we just present our pass can get in. And for the first 500 to arrive will get a free door gift. So i was planning going straight after the retreat end. So after Lunch everyone went back to the room continue our part 2 section.
Again game master plan for a Energiser, so it will get our thought out of the wonderfull food we taken just now. And get back to our discussion. Now the game-master planned a win loss or draw. Sought of a game using ur hands and body only. To demostrate out the work / draw it out / act it out. We got two topic to choose, 1st Movie and 2nd Song Title including chinese songs. After the game we went back to our small group discussion.
The 2nd section 1st question is What should be SPD domain area? 2nd What capabilities as a division do we already have and what do we need to build up to play our role? 3rd What qualities / capabilities should our staff possess, how can we build up and maintain this expertise. In this section all of us are given 1hr to discuss. As usual they went exceeding the time given. That means time schedule for everything will be pushed back by around half and hour. So i must re-consider whether i want to go to Bishan to catch the match(Door Gift :p)
After our group discussion, we proceed for our Tea-Break. We should have our Tea-Break after the group shairng session. Section 2 was delayed so long, and the organiser had to push back to sharing section. Wondering how come i didnt mention who is the presenter? I was too shock about how come he will be selected. For someone who dont know much about what SPD had been doing. Is just like asking a clown to trying to be a judge. Curious who is the clown i refering to. :p It is me lohz, haiz. I was seated beside DD, and he is the leader of our group. He will be the one choosing the presenter and the writer. While he is looking for a presenter, Elaine say Jiahao will be the presenter. Then i add on: "cannot lahz, i don't know much about what SPD had been doing." Then DD said: "Oh, then it is great for you to present and to find out." What a answer?
So during the discussion i write down all the points on to a paper. You think is easy? ... So difficult, becuase while they are discussing each topic. There are on and off replies. Means write down strike off, agree again write down again, HAIZ! 1 question they will spent a lot of time on it. In the end, using up every minute and second of the time given. We already manage to get 1/2 way through. Conclude what i am going to present it consist of two part. 1st part is rather easy, just said what is written on the flip chart paper. The 2nd part was a tough one, y? Because it is not in sentences. All in point form stick on to the cupboard which is next to us.
After the break i was rather anxious on what should i said during the second part. Lucky Elaine, came up to me. Asking me am i ok with the presentation that i am going to present later? I replied: "The 1st part is quite ok, but as for the second part a little blur." Then she suggest i present the first part. Better then never present mahz, then she will go for the second part. I should also thanks Siew Ling :p wondering why? Dont tell you :p
After my presenting i felt so relax. Phew, i seldom did a presentation that why i wont mind doing the part 1, which is rather easy. And i conclude that i should, slow down a little while i speak. I was speaking just like a machine gun .......................... . Lolz, Another thing which i feel that i should change is - I must relax myself, while i was presenting i suddenly got got nerve. The quite a few words i got it mis-pronounced. Before my presentation, i already read through everything. It was rather ok, but when i was presenting. Haiz! I dont really think they heard the whole thing i was saying :(
I am the last group presenter. So after our group, we proceed to the thrid Section. The third section is about, compile everything that SPD had been doing in 2005 till now. 1) Which are the thing we should stop doing! (And also WHY?) 2) Are there any thing that SPD should be doing but are not? 3) Are there thing SPD should continue doing but do differently?
This section, is rather short. We are given around 40min to discuss in our group. Picking out from a list given. Which are the things on it we should not do + why can we not do it? + who should be doing it. We go through one by one, the paper page by page. And this time round Raymond R is the presenter. Being pick by DD again, he already is the writer in the first section. Although he can be exempted, he wont mind.
After the 3rd section finish, we had our dinner at the restaurant again. Same buffet style but different type of food. And again the food are wonderfull. But i am too full to go for 2nd or 3rd round. But i went two round on the cake. It was nice + excellent :p yummy!
